Art Organizations & Resources

Art In The Open (AIO) is a citywide festival (June 9-12, 20010) that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and their relationships with the urban environment. Inspired by the tradition of plein air painting, AIO will welcome artists working in any medium or style to create art outside, on-site over a four-day period along the banks of the tidal Schuylkill River — from the historic Fairmont Park Water Works and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, south to landmark Bartram's Garden.

ART IN THE OPEN, the Irish plein air painters' website, a forum and resource for artists who are interested in painting outdoors.

Philadelphia Open Studio Tours was founded in 1999 as a one-day event by sculptor Karen Brown who wanted to give the public a less formal, more intimate way to view artwork.

In 2004, Philadelphia Open Studio Tours sought the fiscal and administrative support of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, the Philadelphia-based, non-profit organization that creates opportunities for visual artists to reach their professional goals. In 2007, more than 285 artists participated in POST and the event received support from more than 60 businesses and organizations.
